Whenever a residential address is changed, several tasks need to completed.

This webpage is my attempt at summarizing these tasks.

Prior to Moving

Generally, the following preparatory tasks are performed in this order:

  1. Submit your "notice to vacate" if applicable.
    • This is typically done ~2 months in advance depending on the requirements of your contract.
  2. Apply for new living spaces.
    • Have a backup plan in case your main application falls through.
  3. Pack up your stuff.
    • Label totes and boxes.
    • Set aside fresh clothes and hygienic items in a backpack/suitcase – Don't be gross like me.
  4. Reserve moving equipment and/or schedule a moving service.
  5. If moving far, book hotels and/or flights.

Legal Forms & IDs

After moving in, addresses need to be updated on legal forms and IDs including...

  1. Drivers License
  2. Title and Registration

Setups & Transfers

Some accounts need to be setup prior to signing, but most can be setup or transferred after moving in.

  1. Utilities (need to be setup beforehand)
  2. Renters Insurance
  3. Car Insurance
    • If moving to a different state, vehicles oftentimes need to be registered first.
  4. Mailing Address
  5. Internet
  6. Product Subscriptions

Other Tasks
